Philipp Ther is Professor at the Department for History and Civilization at the European University Institute in Florence/Italy. In 1993 he received an MA in history from Georgetown University, in 1997 his PhD at Freie Universität Berlin. In 1997/98 he was a John F. Kennedy-Fellow at Harvard University. Between 2002-2007 he was a junior professor for cultural history at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) in Germany. Ther´s work focuses on Comparative social and cultural history and its methodological foundations, music and history, comparative nationalism studies, ethnic cleansing and genocide, collective memory. In his current research projects he works on European topographies of culture, Ethnic Cleansing in 20th Century Europe, and Collective Memory as a Problem of European History.
