Global Politics Summer School China

Freie Universität Berlin (FU) was founded in 1948 under the motto "Truth, Justice, Freedom." With about 570 professors, 42,500 students in approximately 90 different programs, 4,000 graduates and 1,000 doctoral candidates each year, FU Berlin is the largest of the three universities in Berlin. Its academic profile comprises a broad range of disciplines in the humanities, social and natural sciences. Since 2007, FU Berlin is one of nine universities of excellence in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Fudan University Shanghai is one of China’s top universities. Founded in 1905, Fudan has developed into an internationally renowned, research-driven university with 17 full-time schools and 69 departments. The School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) was founded in the year 2000. SIRPA has two National Priority programs, one State Education Ministry Designated Research programs, two postdoctoral programs, six doctoral degree programs and seven master's degree programs.

Program director Klaus Segbers holds the Chair of Political Science at the Institute for East European Studies and is Professor for International Relations at the Otto-Suhr-Institute for Political Science (OSI) at FU Berlin. His academic expertise extends to the areas of Foreign Policy Analysis and International Relations, in particular International Political Economy and issues of Globalization. Furthermore, he focuses on designing innovative concepts of knowledge-building and transfer, including the development of e-education and blended learning programs in international contexts. Program Director Chen Zhimin is the director of the Department of International Politics at SIRPA. He is also affiliated with the Center for European Studies. Prof. Chen was a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University in 1996-1997, and has also held positions at Queen's University, the University of Durham and Lund University. His research interests cover International Relations Theory, Diplomacy, Chinese Foreign Policy and EU studies. His recent publications in Chinese include "Foreign Policy Integration in European Union: A mission impossible?" (Beijing: Shishi Publishing House, 2003) and "Subnational Governments and Foreign Affairs" (Beijing: Changhzeng Publishing House, 2001). Publications in English include "Nationalism, Internationalism and Foreign Policy" (Journal of Contemporary China, Feb. 2005).

Program Coordinator Ole Jantschek is a Research Fellow at the Institute for East European Studies at FU Berlin. He studied in Dresden, Lausanne, Kraków and Berlin and holds a B.A. in International Relations and a M.A. in East European Studies. His research focus is on transformation processes in Central Europe, on European Integration and on Civil Society. His work experience includes amongst others project management in educational projects on the national and European level for the Krzyzowa Foundation for European Understanding in Poland, the German Council on Foreign Affairs and the distance-learning program International Relations Online.
